DANIEL LIONEYE
&
THE ROLLERS:

GETTING CRAZY FOR THE PEOPLE

Just released new album of Daniel Lioneye is titled The King Of Rock And Roll. Not too modest, but there is no holding back on the album. Women, mindblowers and rock - that seems to be the holy trinity of Daniel Lioneye. But who the heck is Daniel Lioneye? Daniel Lioneye is a secret, which had no chances of remaining a secret. When three members of HIM found their own band, the word spreads fast.

In HIM Linde uses the name Lily Lazer, and now he's Daniel Lioneye. The quitarists sits with his rastas at Finnvox Studios, where HIM is recording their new album. He says he has been two months sober, so he really hasn't got the Daniel Lioneye mood on right now.

Daniel Lioneyes music-partners are drummer Ville Valo and the basists Mige Amour, so there has been no need to gather the band members from further than HIM. At the bands gigs there will also be the producer of The King Of Rock And Roll - Hiili Hiilesmaa, who is our "psychedelia-dude, mixing up motorcycle and other noices on the stage".

Daniel Lioneye is no one record project, for the trio(plus Hiili) have been together for several years. The band has only made a couple of gigs, but this summer there's going to be three new performances. You have to promote to new released album.

- Indeed, when we went to the studio to record the album, we had three songs ready. The rest were made in the studio, Daniel (that's Lily… or Linde…) tells us.

- I haven't thought much of how the album is going to be receiced, when the album was not even intended to be released at all. It was released as a kind of a joke, and if somebody likes it then somebody likes it. At gigs we play a few cover-song in addition to the songs on the album. Like for example Jhon Lee Hookers "One Bourbon, one scotch, one beer". This Daniel Lioneye doesn't like to remain sober and it want's to sing song about booze. So we probably have to quit this sober season here, although it feels like a new world has appeared during it.

- At Daniel Lioneye gigs it's definetly going to be a lot different than at HIM tours, promises Ville Valo. - HIM has gone in its own way really serious, and there are many peoplen who are serious with it and who have pressures. This Danny-bit on the otherhand has no pressures. You can get back to the garage-days and this is writing stress songs. Danny wrote everything at the studio in one night. And when we were recording, all the lyrics were made the same time. That was a total release from the commercial chains. To gigs we rent another Danny's that's Ilkka Lipsanen's bus - there's surely enough room to go wild. We get free from this shit, what is been driven on to us with HIM.

Daniel admits, that the intention was to pull all things over on the record, but suprisingly there was some real music made in the studio as well. Yes, and this fits his picture of good rock'n roll. Ofcourse as a quitarist it's fun to turn your quitar loud and play with distortion. And this really is a change from HIM.

- Well ok, Steve Vai has been a great idol of mine since I was a kid, although I don't even try to play the same style as he, says Daniel. - But otherwise I don't listen to other quitarists, I like more of Iggy Pop, Elvis and that kind of stuff. Technical showmanship is not that important or interesting.

TIME FOR THE JOINT ROLLERS

Daniel Lioneye is a summary of rock-dreams. There's sex, booze and Cadillacs. Don't you get that enough in HIM, when you have to fish it out in the name of Daniel Lioneye?

- Well yes probably I guess yeah. Or… I don't know, Daniel hesitates. - Well I guess some of the people take this seriously, but Daniel Lioneye has clearly a gleam in the eye. We already had a discussion that we would go an make the second Danny-album in September, but now it seems like that we cant make it. I think that this system is going to remain as a forever kind of thing beside HIM. You make it when you have the time. Because with this you definetly don't have think anything at all. Just have fun. Play and be drunk.

Ville Valo reminds that Daniel Lioneyes band is called The Joint Rollers, and he plays in it with the name Bil (with one "i") and Mige. And now The Joint Rollers are making their own album.

- It's going to bee straighter stuff than Danny's music, which includes some too sophisticated material, Ville (or Bil) says. - Danny won't get into The Joint Rollers gigs at all. We're looking for different kind of quitarvirtuoses. Danny will have no part in the whole thing. There's a kind of idea that we would go straight to the studio to write all the songs and at seven in the morning we would go to Finnvox and master the album. We'll take photos of the studio session and they will be taken to a "one hour film"- photoshop, and the album would be released rightaway. So we would make the whole record with the masters in 24 hours.

It's not a surprise that Bil (or that is Ville Valo) plays the drums with Daniel Lioneye, because the man used to be a drummer before he began to sing.

- The rhythm is partly in my blood, Ville Valo (or Bil) says. - HIMs Kaasu is also a good drummer, but not nearly as good as me. He doesn't have the right touch. I'm trying to get the right feel, a Bill Ward- spirit uglybeautiful play. And at gigs we build up on appearance. I'm going to have Harley Davidson steering and hopefully the whole front. Yea, and I've been thinking that HIM could do middle Europe and Danny could do America, Australia and Japan. That would be the most reasonable thing to do. Ofcourse there's going to be a video release from the Daniel Lioneye album. The song is going to be "Never been in love 'till The Day I Die". In there will be some homecamera footage of HIMs boozing and clips from Daniel Lioneye's last summers gig from Provinssirock.

GOING CRAZY FOR THE PEOPLE

So Daniel Lioneye will make three gigs this summer. To Ilosaarirock we sent a five pagelong raiderlist, where we demanded prostitutes, strippers and a straight phoneline to Matti Nykanen for the band.

- And on each gig we give a bottle of Jack Daniel's to Danny, Bil (or Ville Valo) promises. -we have to be on our toes with Mige, that Danny won't kick us out of the band. This really ain't our main source of income, but this give us bread ang drinks.

Suddenly Ville Valo (or Bil) whispers that Danny (or Linde) is really a very sensetive boy, who's job is to be a warning rolemodel for teenagers. Danny goes crazy for the people.

- True, in reality I'm sensetive and all the intoxicants are bad, Linde (or Daniel Lioneye) admits. - The King Of Rock And Roll album there's a song called Dope Danny, which is supposively going to a "against drugs"- collection album. This music is not in anycase pro-drug stuff.

- But for Danny's gigs I will not go sober. And that's why we do so few gigs. If I would be Danny for three weeks straight, I would probably burn all the bridges behind me.
